International Women in Engineering Day honors women in the field of engineering by raising the profile of those changing the field one degree at a time. We celebrate the many contributions of female engineers both here at PPL and across the utility industry by highlighting one of our amazing team members.
Melody Alam moved to Allentown, Pa. at the age of seven, and over the years she was influenced by her uncle, who worked for PPL as an accountant for many years. “(My uncle) found his role fulfilling and worthwhile,” shared Alam. “The company appealed to me due to its longstanding commitment to community involvement and its reputation for diversity and reliability.”
Growing up, Melody did not consider engineering as a career path until a high school internship at an engineering company exposed her to women who were already in the field. “From that experience, I had the empowering realization that women can be leaders of major project decisions that impact businesses and communities,” shared Melody.
Melody joined PPL Electric Utilities as a distribution system operator soon after graduating from Lafayette College with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Today, she works as a reliability engineer helping us create the utilities of the future and deliver energy safely, reliably and affordably for our customers.
Today, she is helping to optimize the reliability of electric service by analyzing demand patterns and grid system behavior. As she makes a difference in providing essential energy that positively impacts so many lives, she is proud of the choice she made and her career path.
“The presence of strong female representation in engineering helps to promote a culture of equality, respect, and fairness— where everyone has equal opportunities to succeed and contribute.”
